Observer assignments will range from Crescent City to San Diego, CA with possible deployments in Oregon and Washington on fishing vessels. Vessel lengths range from 35’-80’ and make trips from 1 to 45 days at a time. Vessel types include Drift Gillnet, Set Gillnet, Pelagic Longline, Purse Seine, and Albacore Troll. Observers will be responsible for:
• Gather information onboard vessels about catch, location, gear, fishing operations and the interaction of protected species • Identify and record marine mammal sightings • Collect and maintain biological specimens from marine mammals, sea turtles, seabirds and fish • Collect environmental conditions, geographical positions, catch Requirements: • BS degree in one of the natural sciences with a minimum 30 semester hours or equivalent in the biological sciences. At least one undergraduate course in math or statistics. • Experience with data entry on computers • Must pass a physical • Pass training • Be able to swim • Lift and carry heavy items • Tolerate stress, live in confined quarters and deal with seasickness • Be a US citizen Salary range is DOE and includes benefits.
