Hello Observers and Observer-related Folk,
Extra! Extra! The June 2006 Mail Buoy has hit the streets! This edition has shaped up with some really interesting material, with topics ranging from: a look towards the forthcoming International Fisheries Observer Conference, a great employment opportunity in Antarctica, observer digital data-collection technology in Australia, marine mammal observing in Alaska, a comical sea-adventure written by a legendary observer, an in-depth research piece describing potential mismanagement in Alaskan waters, a letter to refute claims made in an article presented in the February newsletter, and a satirical column written by our very own Uncle Blobbo. Enjoy! All Mail Buoy newsletters can be found on the APO website (www.apo-observers.org) or on ObserverNet.org (www.observernet.org ). Please, feel free to print copies and/or forward to observers and any other interested parties. And, please contact us with comments or if you know of others who wish to receive our newsletter or would like to be removed from our mailing list. Best Regards, Keith Davis and Liz Mitchell The Mail Buoy Editors Association for Professional Observers P.O. Dear Mail Buoy Readers,
The following is an e-mail the Mail Buoy staff has received which refutes a statement made in the "There's a New Sheriff in Town" article of the June 2006 Mail Buoy: "In your newsletter "NEW SHERIFF IN TOWN" you indicated that NWO was being replaced by MRAG Americas Inc. because of performance concerns. That is not the case and that statement should be immediately retracted because that is not true. Contract period was up and NWO Inc. competed for the contract along with a number of other companies." This e-mail was sent to us by John D. Kelley of the Pacific Islands Regional Observer Program, NMFS. We have also asked him to write a Letter to The Editor for our September issue of the Mail Buoy and have thanked him for his valued comments. Tha Mail Buoy Staff
